Before replacing your router, check these basics

Poor Wi-Fi can have several causes. A little diagnosis helps you decide whether placement, settings, or new hardware is the right next step.

Separate internet speed from Wi-Fi coverage

Test near the router and in the room where the connection feels slow. If possible, compare with a wired connection. A slow wired result may point to the internet service or connection rather than a coverage problem. Repeat tests at different times before drawing conclusions.

Try better placement

Place the router in an open, elevated location where practical, rather than inside a cabinet. Walls, large appliances, and building materials can affect coverage. Move it and retest before buying additional equipment.

Check equipment and settings

Confirm that the router firmware is current and that older devices support the network configuration. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions before changing settings. Keep a record of changes so you can undo them if performance worsens.

Decide whether mesh fits your home

A multi-node system can help some layouts, but placement and backhaul still matter. Check supported wired connections, service compatibility, and required subscriptions. Compare the total cost and return terms rather than relying only on a coverage-area headline.
